Delayed progress
So it's been a while since I've written up a progress report... However, I am glad to report that I have taken a load of pictures sine I was last gone, and compiling will take place, shortly!

Final Project - progress1
So far, I have animated one sequence of a white queen and black king fighting (it's pretty extensive, too), and the opening tile sequence. So it begins!

Final Project Storyboard
My brother and I sit down in the family room and make angry faces at eachother, the camera switching between our faces.
The camera zooms to a wide view that includes us both and I throw a chessboard onto the table with the pieces oddly pre-stuck to it. The pieces are made in illustrator and are digitally inserted.
As we command each piece with gestures, the camera pans down to the pieces and it walks to its new spot, attacking the piece it hits in the move with its little weapon
Each piece will be personified and look like living people with a chess-like essence. For example, pawns have little spears and are sorta scrawny, rooks are bulky and punch/throw other pieces, knights have lances, bishops have canes, queens have large swords, and kings have nothing.
The moves will be choreographed. I'll make a predetermined list of movements and put them together afterwards.
As my brother or I make a movement, the camera will either show us both, show a low shot of the board so that it can see our hands as we gesture, or sit on the shoulder of the opposite player.
As it gets down to the king, he surrenders by waving a white flag. All the winning pieces jump up and down and celebrate, and as the camera returns to a wide shot, I stand up and do a little cheer.

Stop Motion Project Idea
Since we are creating a stop-motion animation and have to plan ahead, I looked around on the web for ideas and examples, and came across this one...
And I am inspired. Hopefully as I'm home over Thanksgiving break, I can make the video involving my brother, where we play against each other, and the chess pieces act similarly as they do in this video. They would, however, have more interaction between the pieces and my brother and I. As my brother and I play, a thought bubble will pop up above the board, connected to my brother's and my own head, and little animations of personified chess pieces will fight as we make moves. I'm thinking that the living pieces would be illustrator-created objects and transposed upon the stopmotion collection of images of us playing, or made of clay and put into the thought-bubble window. I'm unsure, at the moment, but it doesn't really affect the "plot", so I'll figure it out later.
The camera would be slightly above the board most of the time, but would jump to scenes that are important, like a piece moving and "killing" another one, or our expressions when something happens.
